"The Flashing Winds" - Mat-Su Concert Band Winter |

The Mat-Su Concert Band under the direction of Gleo Huyck is presenting their winter concert. Our feature composition is "Flashing Winds" by Jan Van der Roost. Other songs include "Royal Fireworks Music" by Handel, and "The Liberty Bell March" by Sousa. Mat-Su Concert Band is the oldest and largest music ensemble in the Mat-Su Valley with some of the best instrumentalists of the valley and Anchorage. New players, especially clarinet-players, are welcomed throughout the year.
Admission is free.

Iron Dog Participant Creates Speed4Needs to Raise Funds for Charities.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska is one of four beneficiaries.
ANCHORAGE, AK -- Anchorage businessman and first-time Iron Dog race participant John Witte is raising funds for four charities through Speed4Needs.org -- an online sponsorship program tied to Mr. Witte’s inaugural run of the Iron Dog snow machine race.
Before and during the race, individuals, businesses and corporations are encouraged to go to www.speed4needs.org to make a pledge in support of one of four charities included in the Speed4Needs effort. Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Alaska is the only Alaska-based nonprofit included as a beneficiary.
“We are so grateful to be included in Mr. Witte’s efforts to raise funds and awareness for nonprofit organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska through his participation in the Iron Dog Race,” says Taber Rehbaum, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska. “As a result of John’s generosity, and the gifts of those who sponsor him, the lives of Alaska’s children will be changed for the better, forever.”
The Iron Dog is the world’s longest and toughest snow machine race covering over 2,000 miles of remote terrain. The race begins at Big Lake on February 17, travels north to the midway point in Nome, and then heads south to the finish in downtown Fairbanks on February 25th.
Tax deductible contributions in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska can be made through the end of February by going to www.speed4needs.org and clicking on the BBBS logo. Gifts can also be made over the phone by calling Big Brothers Big Sisters at (907) 433-4600.
The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1-to1 relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. BBSAK serves an annual average of 1500 children in 20 communities across Alaska.

Play - Twelve Angry Jurors |

VPA brings you Twelve Angry Jurors. This tense drama depicts a jury forced by a single dissenting voice into extensive deliberation to decide the fate of a young man accused of fatally murdering his father. “He doesn’t stand a chance,” mutters the bailiff as the jurors are escorted into a bleak room for their deliberation. It appears to eleven of them that it is an open-an-shut case, until one man begins questioning the “facts” and suggesting there may indeed be “reasonable doubt” that would require a “not guilty” verdict. The deliberations become very personal as these twelve individuals become acquainted with the personalities of their peers and the things that compel them to be less than objective in their assessment of the case and more than a little prejudice against the defendant. Testimonies are re-examined, alliances are formed, tempers become short, arguments become heated, opinions get changed and changed again, personal experiences are revealed—and it all combines in volatility seeming ready to explode the jury room. The tense scenes and sharp dialogue amongst these characters are elements of this electrifying drama that will keep the adrenalin flowing throughout the audience.
This was originally written as a televised play by Reginal Rose in 1954 called Twelve Angry Men. The play was adapted for the stage in 1955 and has been performed on and off Broadway and in countless theaters. It was adapted for the silver screen in 1957, starring Henry Fonda, and was again produced as a film in 1990, starring Jack Lemmon and George C. Scott.
VPA welcomes Michael Sheehan and a host of veteran and new actors to this production, directed by Wendy Golter. The show offers fantastic drama for high school aged youth and adults but would not be a good choice production for younger children.
Twelve Angry Jurors performs February 10th through February 26th and is sponsored by the generous support of Denali Law Group and Lead Dog Enterprises. Shakespeare's Twelfth Night - Colony High Play |

This Friday, Colony High School's Drama program will open a delightful comedy full of love triangles, mistaken identity, and drunken revelries. The talented cast and crew are putting on Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, or What You Will.
The play tells the tale of a shipwrecked girl, whose misfortunes lead her to serving a duke in the disguise of a boy. The duke is in love with a countess who doesn't return his affections and the poor girl has fallen in love with the duke, but can't do a thing about it given her disguise. While trying to court the countess for the duke, the countess falls for the boy who's actually a girl! The show will have you laughing and wondering what in the world will happen next with all of it's twists.
Performances are scheduled for February 17th, 18th, 24th, and 25th at 7:00 at Colony High School's theater. Tickets are available online matsuk12.us/chs or at the door.
